The Marine Biology program at the University of SINÚ has the mission of the comprehensive training of human resources with knowledge, skills, competencies and values for the conservation and sustainable management of marine natural resources through the generation, dissemination, research and application of knowledge, with a focus on the environmental area and biotechnology; permanently linking with the productive and social sectors.

By 2025, the Marine Biology program will be recognized as a leader in the development of its core processes of teaching, research, community outreach and extension with high standards of quality and innovation capacity to contribute to solving the socio-environmental problems of the region and the country.

• Describe and explain biological processes in their marine environmental context.
• Apply scientific research methods that generate new knowledge about biological processes and marine environments.
• Identify the problems of managing marine natural resources in different contexts, especially productive, political, environmental and cultural environments.
• Participate in the planning and development of productive and research projects related to marine natural resources, in an inter, multi and transdisciplinary manner for the best use of these resources.
• To provide the basic knowledge necessary to understand and comprehend the fundamental processes directly related to the analysis, design, implementation, operation and management of projects in the transformation of aquatic biological products and by-products through biotechnology.

To comprehensively train Marine Biologists with ethical principles and values, who investigate and analyze biological processes at different levels of organization for the management, conservation and sustainable production of natural resources and the marine environment.

The Marine Biologist graduating from the University of Sinú will be a well-rounded professional with training in the scientific, technological, administrative, and humanistic fields, enabling them to excel in society by applying their skills and competencies to solve environmental biological problems. They will be distinguished by their scientific, innovative, and investigative nature, with leadership skills focused on entrepreneurship and innovation, in line with national and international trends. Furthermore, the Marine Biologist from the University of Sinú will complement their training in areas related to science and technology, knowledge that will help them generate scientific proposals in the various fields of the profession.

The University of Sinú Elías Bechara Zainum presents a strong competitive and differentiating advantage by promoting the articulation of the Marine Biologist with the transversal training components of professionals in the biological and biotechnological area and incorporation of curricular elements of the discipline with strength in the training of disciplinary competencies among others, maintaining an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary approach from entrepreneurship and innovation with meaning and social relevance.

This perspective is generally expressed in the need to train marine biologists with a pluralistic approach, one who understands the theoretical and methodological characteristics of various approaches, can identify their differences, and grasp the implications each has for their applied development. For this reason, it assumes a foundational training based on processes, without privileging any particular approach, but rather a perspective grounded in the universal knowledge that marine biology has achieved in this century.

The Marine Biologist graduating from the University of Sinú, Cartagena branch, will be able to:

• Propose or participate in research projects related to the biological knowledge of marine species.
• To provide technical and scientific advice to different levels of the productive sector in aspects of aquaculture, fishing, environmental management and administration of marine resources.
• Managing companies related to fishing, the environment, and aquaculture
• Participate in the development and planning of scientific research and technological development policies at a national and international level. Also in the performance of management policies and administration of marine resources and coastal areas.
• Develop your profession in the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment, marine research and environmental conservation institutes, also in those related to fishing and aquaculture, in regional development corporations, in policy planning and management bodies such as the National Navy and Prosecutor's Office (Environmental Crimes).
• To train human resources at a professional, technological and technical level.
• You will be able to carry out your activities in the different productive sectors at the public, social and private level in relation to the regulation, management and administration of marine resources at the national and international level: and in scientific research institutions and secondary and higher education.
• To establish their own consulting firms in areas such as coastal management, environmental impact, or any other related to the productive sector. Furthermore, to pursue postgraduate studies at the national and international levels. In other words, our graduates will be key to achieving the goals and objectives of any company or institution; they will be capable of analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, managing, and maintaining up-to-date infrastructure, developing and/or proposing necessary research, and integrating it into the local, national, and international context.
